What's the advantage of using a grandfather's personal memories for a History essay?

This isn't a homework question as such, I was just mulling over it whilst finishing my report.

I've been doing a report on the Blitz and since my grandfather lived through it, I 'interviewed' him and used many of his memories in my project (with his consent, obviously! XD)

What do you think are the advantages of using personal memories? And, i suppose, How do you think it helps us understand history better?

It can make it more personal, and easy to understand and empathise with the people who lived through that time. Also, it would help us to correct our mistakes from the past if you know of people who lived through incredible historic moments.
I think using your grandfather's memories was a really cool idea - very individual!
