now I've liked Harleys since i was a little kid but now that i'm buying one i'm thinking about which is more affordable. i was also thinking about what model(s) is better for a begining rider. now this isnt a question about which is better for certain people but more to find out which is better for a beginner

Custom and sports bikes are worlds apart, I don't know the market in the US but surely you can get a cheaper jap custom, Yamaha did a XV model that was available (I believe in 250, 535, 750 & 1100 cc) various engine sizes, a nice comfortable cheaper alternative you could always progress to a Harley.
I would steer away from anything bigger than 600cc as a beginner, from experience (65k miles a yr by bike) new riders have an accident (it depends as to you luck whether its a minor or serious one) within 1-2 years usually non fault but due to not expecting car drivers to do the unexpected!! Gain the bike & road experience on a smaller used bike first at least you wont feel so bad when you drop it, every one does at one point!

Harleys are the motorcycle equivalent of an old rare muscle car. There's purpose, but they're also verrrrrrrry expensive. My mum just got a brand new 2008-spec Night Rod though and it looks pretty sweet...I'd rather stick with the Jap bikes for beginners though. Kawasaki Ninja ZXR250s are your best bet. As for Harleys, they're all relatively slow which means not much chance of a fatal crash, but they're heavy bikes and not as maneuvreable as the nimble sports bikes.

Think of it this way:
Why pay $20K for a bike when a $5K bike will do the same thing?

Everybody I know that currently owns a Harley are desperate to sell it
