whats background data?

I jsut updated to JF 1.5 and for data sync it says it needs background data enabled? I dont want to get charged with data services because I DO NOT have a data plan. will this charge me?

I assumed it means the phone will sync while asleep...but I'm not 100% on that

I tried it off, but when I went to the market, it told me it needed background data.

I'm assuming it's the small little things that require data, like when you are going through the application list and it needs to load more as you move down.

or like if you are on espn or yahoo and the page refreshes for the scores...

background data is referring to any data any app needs such as services like weather apps or the market or gps.
