Professor candidate? What sort of things would a history department search committee from a top of the line university be looking for in a candidate with a newly minted Ph.D. applying for a position as a tenure track Assistant Professor?

What sort of things would make that candidate shine out amongst all the other hopefuls for this sort of a position?

You've got a few choices. The first is to check out this site http://www.higheredjobs.com . They list current faculty openings at colleges and universities around the country. The other is to attend the AHA conference and try to line up interviews there. I'll warn you the market is not good for college profs right now, especially in the humanities - people take what they can get. Thinking you might get a job at a top school just out of grad school with probably not many publications or teaching experience isn't too realistic. But good luck.
