What's a tensioner in a Toyota Corolla do?

I had my car worked on today and found out that my Toyota Corolla 2006 was in need of a replacement tensioner and belt. I was told that the belt split.

In the paperwork specifically it states for parts:
belt, v ribbed
Tensioner Assy, V-RI

So what does all this exactly mean? Does anyone know? =>
