Whats a good way to get started on fashion photography?

i have been using my slr camera for a while but recently ive been interested in fashion and modeling. how can i get started (this is with my friend, by the way), without stupid-looking pictures? we've thought of ideas but whenever they are put into action, it just looks ridiculous.
 
that's the whole point of fashion / photoshoots

put your ideas into action...set up a photoshoot

and snap away ... you'll find your direction through your view-finder

plus it'll build up your profolio and it'd be super fun to do especially with your friends as models
 
Spend a lot of time looking at the various fashion magazines at B&N or Borders and take notes of the lighting, lens selection, camera position and poses.

You can also look at the networking websites like One Model Place and Model Mayhem for ideas.

Then just start shooting when ever you have a willing victim.

You may have guessed that most fashion photographers have some kind of formal photo education and many, many years experience shooting many different subjects other than Fashion.

Of my colleagues, some come from shooting sports, weddings, portraits, photojournalism and even one is a full time medical photographer. The bottom line is, they all have extensive experience using their cameras and have excellent control of composition and lighting and can recognize when to press the shutter release when shooting models.
 
Learn how to use photoshop. If you don't already have it, go out and get it and learn it. Search the net for photoshop tutorials, that will get you started.

Join deviantart.com. There you can get inspiration and get feedback on your stuff.

Depending on how good you are, whether you're just starting to get an eye for it, or you just have a natural touch, it could take you anywhere from a year to ten years or more to actually become succesful in fashion photography.

Where you live is also a big factor. If you live in a hick town in the middle of nowhere with no modern culture, theres a good chance you will never get anywhere. I would suggest moving to a big city. There not only could you get noticed but there's just more events, people, etc to shoot. You need quality material. You need to have something people want, something different you know? Unique.

But again, if you're just playing around with your friend right now, all you can do is practice. I began doing photography 5 years ago and its amazing to look back at my work and see the improvements. Good luck
