whats a good road bike for around $500-$1500?

a friend lent me his bike and i decided to buy one so i can work out, my route is more or less 11 miles. I'm looking for something that's easy to use, comfortable, reliable, easy to maintain, and aesthetics is a plus but not really a prerequisite. By the way the road that I'm going to bike on is asphalt if that helps make you answer my question. thanks in advance.
 
You can get an 08 Cannnondale X7 Cyclocross for about $650

I got mine from a seller at Craigslist and it met my requirements (I cycle about 7-10 miles).

Another option is the 2006 Trek 1000 Road Bike
