Whats a good effect pedal for fast hard rock /light metal?

At the moment I'm using for distortion a distortion pedal by ARIA ... its great for 70s rock and solos but what would be a good pedal that makes new metal solos such as system of a down stuff sound really clear and powerful? It doesn't sound right with the ARIA distortion...
