i dont care about breed as much but what characterisitcs does a trail buddy need to have??

I want him to protect me but then be hardy enough for warm weather trails and have fun! = )

i like big dog's like irish wolfhounds great danes and i LOVE dobermans i just can't decide i don't care if it's a mutt or a big or small dog.. really lol just what things would make a good trail dog?? longer legs? shorter legs? i only like backpacking in warm weather so it can't have to thick a fur coat i was thinking a pit bull but those dogs arent allowed in certain areas

any tips?? thanks!

ps oh and my dog will be leashed and i will pick up after it! no worries there
good point about the bigger dogs and the stress on there bodies from growing didn't think about that!!

oh and i do plan on getting a puppy and when it's old enough about a 1 or 2 years then i'll start backpacking with him again = )

you guys are so helpful thanks!!

Big dogs really aren't good for intense long distances. Their joints are already under stress from their sheer mass and lots of exercise is risky. A medium size short coated dog would be good. If you aren't picky about breed, go to a shelter and adopt an active young adult. Puppies are too fragile to do any rigorous exercise until they are over a year old. An adult rescue could jump right into your routine.

A labrador retriever!

They are energetic, enthusiastic, sporty dogs!

I think it would be a perfect companion for outdoorsy activities.

I also think a lab would be the perfect size. Unlike giant breeds, they don't have as much risk at developing hip dysplasia and are perfect size for bringing with you. Not too big, not too small.
