Whats a good bike to get for under £250 / $400?

I'm looking to buy a new mens road/mountain style bike for roughly £250/$400 and just want to know of any particularly good models or brands to look out for. It has to be solidly built, with a good number of gears and ideally with front/rear suspension and lightweight. Any help or advice appreciated
 
Don't buy a dual suspension bicycle for under $400, You will be getting junk components. Dual suspension is not used on road bikes and is usually used for downhill racing. I have been mountain biking for 22 years and my current bike is built for road racing and it has a ridgid suspension. If you get a bike with front suspension only it will actually take less effort to ride, because the bobbinng action of the up and down movement of the rear suspension is energy sapping.
 
Road and Mountain bikes are completely different. It sounds like you want a hybrid, like a mixture of the two, they are softer and more forgiving than a road bike but not as chunky or heavy as a road one, check out Specialized or Scott hybrids.
