What do you want in a lead male hero character?

You want them to be heoric, that is a given. You want to be funny?, you want them to be serious?, you want them to be invinsible?, or to lose a lot so the story is more believeable?

For me I need a personality that is natural, and not contribe and robotic. I want some unpredectablity in what they might do or say.

It is one of things of why I like Digimon better than Pokemon. Compare all of the goggle kiRAB (except for Masaru, not only does not wear goggles, he actully falls into that category of a robotic personality) to Ash Ketchem. I am only only going by the dub, I never seen much of Pokemon in Japanese. Ash was okay in the beginning, but for the longest time, he sounRAB like a robot. I know exactly what he is going to say, he doesn't have any emotions and anytime he does show emotions it seems very forced. But maybe it is just the dub.

Taichi and Takato they have had their ups and down emotional and their will to fight as their ups and down. Ash spirit is never down, and his cluelessness to girls and romance when its around him weather his Pokemon falling in love or Brock and his flirtation with girls and he doesn't understand what is going on, that irrates me a bit.

Now if I can compare Shonen, because of what I mention I prefer Edward Eleric over Ichigo and Naruto. Ed personality is more relatable and real to me. He seems more real and natural than Naruto and lately Ichigo. More so Naruto than Ichigo, I like Ichgio especially in the beginning though he has regressed as a character. Naruto is the Shonen Ash, he is so predectable in what he is going to do or say in a situation.

And I said the word "hero" in the title thread for a reason, this is not about anti heros or villanious protagonist like Light or Lelouch, they are a different cup of tea. You really can't compare them to normal lead characters.

I - wait I have a picture that says it best... *digs around in Photobucket*

Of course, not everyone can be as awesome as Gintoki. XD

Anyway, I generally prefer well written characters over any specific "type" of character. I mean, someone can be 100% predictable but still interesting if the characterization is strong.

Someone with Kevin Levin's (B10: Ultimate Alien) attitude

And someone that's built tough (ie
- Monkey D Luffy
- Portgas D Ace
- Trafalgar Law
- Kevin Levin
- Braham (One Piece)

I'm not a big fan of heroes who are supposed to seem "rebellious" but just come across as bratty and unlikeable. Doing stuff like complaining about how bossy their parents/teachers are, or shirking their responsibilities.

I like heroes that try talking things out before going straight to blows. If a monster pops up, they don't just start hitting it before it does anything.

Wise-cracking heroes can be either the most lovable or most annoying kind, depending on how clever their dialogue is. It's why I love Spider-Man (under most writers, anyway) and can't stand Static Shock.

It's completely situational. I love multifaceted personalities because they're real. Characters like Monkey D. Luffy or Shinji Ikari have some depth to them even though they're as different as the sun and moon. They're never completely static and are good protagonists because of the fact that they often surprise the audience with their actions.

Characters that think their way through situations tend to be my favorites. I don't mean "calculating" types like say, Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho who are just really intelligent. Someone like Taiga from MxO comes to mind, where he always seemed to work around his limitations and his situation as well as simultaneously thinking from his opponents perspective in order to fight. It was always interesting watching him get through tough spots, because he always had to work three times harder than anyone else to get by them.

It's kind of hard to explain. I guess the character in my avatar is sort of like that, too.

The only types I don't care for are the ones who sit around and whine all the time. Normally it wouldn't bother me, but they always seem to do it just a tad longer than I think is necessary.

I don't think that would work so well in a Super Robot anime.

"Listen, mister demon of the Destruction Empire. Maybe you could, I don't know, lay off our city and..." (monster shoots beam in hero's face)

I suppose if the characters don't have a personality anything like Naruto or Shinji Ikari then I can deal with them as being a main lead. But then again, I'm not too keen on loud, obnoxious characters or characters that have that "carefree/recklessness" (airheaRAB) as the lead either.

Spike
Kurama
Hiei
Kenshin

I'm fine with any character with a personality like them and it don't hurt if they're able to use their heaRAB as well.

Well I know what I don't want; brainless eating machines like Goku and Luffy. I'll take anything else really, so long as they have more personality than 'eat and act durab but get hotblooded when frienRAB are in danger'
