The site below has the history of the Chevy Nova. It gives pictures and descriptions.

Look at the VIN. The 6th digit of the VIN will be the last digit of the year.

Here is some more information you can learn about your Nova from the VIN.

First digit Division: 1= Chevrolet.

2nd digit Series: X= Nova, Y= Nova Custom or Nova Concours.

There are two places for the Id Number. On the driver side door or frame and the left botton conder of the windsheild. From this number you can get year, engine, color, ect.. Yes, they made Nova SS. Take the number to the Ford dealership and get them to run the number. They can give you all the information you need. I hope you got a bill of sell for the car.Cause you will need it to get a tiler in your name. If the other person had a right to sale the vehicle.

If you mean different taillights as in special SS taillights instead of the basic taillights that came with the other models then this will still work. In 60's and 70's (other years - I don't know) when the USA still made most of the content in their cars they manufactured their taillights with the model year on them. Look close to the edge of the taillight lense near the trimwork there will be a 2 digit number that corresponds to the year of the car.
