What would you suggest that I look for in a basic, beginner's bike?

I used to ride my bike a lot when I was young. I want to get back in to bike riding now in my early 30's, but just want a basic bike to start with (something less than $150).
I've looked up some things on the Internet, but I don't know which features are really key to look for, and which ones are just "fluff."

Can you suggest a few things that are really important to look for when purchasing a basic bike? Somethings that will help me distinguish the basic ones from the cheap, crappy ones? Thank you. =)
Yeah, I looked on Craigslist for example, for some better used bikes, but then I'm afraid that I'll get ripped off by the owner not telling me that something is wrong with the bike. And, I won't know enough to be able to judge that.
