What would you look for when buying Bike Lights?

Is it the brightness or the running type. Under here is what I will be using it for.

I cycle to the gym nearly every day. But I have to go buy a dark area to get there and back. I would be using it for about 40 minutes per day. I would need the light to be bright enough but also last as long.

Do you have any suggestions of what I should look for when buying the lights?
Thanks Akca but could you give me any other information?
Just to let you know James, I have no budget.
I agree what you see when no cheap ones are good.

What you want is a cheap light, which is bright and lasts for a long time, without needing to constantly change the batteries. Oh, and smaller batteries makes it better too. And be waterproof. Im afraid i cant recommend cheap ones, as I always buy the expensive ones.

High capacity alkaline batteries should do the job on the power side.

LED lights can be very bright and have a long battery life in a light weight unit. Avoid only flashing mode as you need a solid mode to meet regulations.

Lights with a standard krypton type lamp give a better light, but need bigger batteries. These are heavier and bulkier.

You can supplement the lights with some passive reflective material, maybe a "hi vis" jacket, or reflective clothing.

Thats about it for me.
Have a look at halfords website and a look at ebay for bike lights.
