...months...does that seem right? ask? I just got a tax bill from MA for $360 for "motor vehicle excise". It's a brand new car, 2010 honda civic. So I get that I pay a lot more because of that, but I have only had the car for 2 months. So I'm kind of wondering why the tax is so high. Does this seem right? It's my first car. Aren't I only supposed to pay for 2 months, not the full year? IF I did have the car for a full year, would I be paying $2160???? I can't imagine that's right.
The gov site says "If the motor vehicle is registered after January 31, it is taxed for the period extending from the first day of the month in which it is registered to the end of the calendar year. For example, if a vehicle is registered on April 30, it will be taxable as of April 1, for the nine months of the year (April through December) and the excise due therefore; will be 9/12 of the full excise". So am I reading this wrong or should I really be expecting to pay 2k next year for MV Excise?
