What would you do if you have a neighbour that complains all the time about the smell

of cooking? We live in a building that was built in the 1880's now converted into flats. It has been a few months now, and quite often this lady from 2 floors upstairs kept complaining about our stinky cooking (even with the extractor fan on). I have receieved a letter from her before saying about how old the building is, and how the smell of cooking can go through the vents and hall. I've done my best to be reasonably nice with her but the last time she knocked on my door, my 5-year old opened it and got a right earful from her while my little boy listened closely. This has upsetted me for a few days. I've tried all sorts- I always put a big towel down at the bottom of the door to trap the smell, opened the windows-but I refuse to open the windows now as it is very cold especially in the evenings. I don't want my boy to be sick because of her complaining about the smell all the time.
I don't know how I stand. I really want to do something about this. I do feel harrassed and helpless. I am quite cautious of what I cook because I don't want another knock from her. And at the same time, I know I should not be feeling like this in my own home. I should not be living in fear.
Would like to hear your opinion, advice on what to do next, or bitch fits are all welcome.
Thank you.
a right earful to ME, not my son**
Oh yes, and I have told my son not to open the door ever again**
I love the fact that some of you think that the lady concerned is elderly. SHE IS! Well done.
