What would you class as the biggest event in journalism history?

I am hoping to do my dissertation this coming year on major historical events in journalism.

I would like to know what events stick in your mind, not just cause of the scale of the certain event, but also the way it was reported.

I am talking about such things as The Falling Man picture being an image that everyone can recall from the Twin Towers terrorist attacks.

I don't mind if people want to use the terrorist attacks as their example but it would be nice to hear of some others too :-)

Remember I am looking at this from a journalistic side, so I need to hear about what articles/pictures that sum up the event you are talking about. If you want to talk about something before your lifetime that's fine.

Don't worry I don't want to quote anyone in my dissertation, just looking for ideas, thanks :-)

There are two events that stick in mind - the first, obviously the twin towers and the second, when Princess Diana died. The coverage of both events by the media was astounding, not unnecessarily so, but the events were just so massive, obviously they just dominated the news. And not just the news - there were documentaries made and still are being, and programmes about what could have been done differently in each instance; how these events could have been avoided; conspiracy theories; you name it, every angle's been covered. I think the circumstances surrounding both events were so atrocious that the public found it hard to comprehend which was why it was covered so widely, and I think they are still fresh in our minds as people are still, even after all this time, trying to come to terms with what happened.
