What would the government do if thousands of armed civilians gathered in the streets?

Hypothetical scenario:
Congress convenes to vote on a bill that would nullify the the 2nd amendment and make guns illegal, requiring civilians to hand over their weapons.
The NRA announces it and a protest is organized. 50,000 well armed civilians amass outside during the proceeding for a PEACEFUL demonstration (whilst carrying firearms, for dramatic effect).

Would they declare martial law? There's no way the cops could handle it, or the military I think. It's a lose-lose for the government if shots are fired. Do they have a contingency plan for that?
@Chris Wade:
me too. I think most gun owners feel the same. Looking back over my question I can see where it might look like I'm anti-gun. I'm not. I'm a veteran as well. I was just wondering what would happen in the hypothetical scenario.
They will never be able to take away our guns, but bet your asss they will try, and when they do, we need to know how to handle the situation.
