What would the best carrier and phone be??

I just started doing long-haul truck driving all over Canada and the US. I am looking for a phone/pda that would allow me to stay in touch with my family back in Ontario (preferably with a Messenger type service but email works too).

From doing some research I have discovered that Canadian carriers are rather expensive when roaming in the US. Is there a US carrier that covers both Canada and the US in any of there plans??

Thanks for any reply's, as I know nothing about the US carriers.
 
Cingular and Verizon provide the best service in the US. Maybe 2 phones would be the best answer, one for Canada and one for the US?
 
Funny you should say that. I have spent the past 5hrs or so reading, and I am thinking a blackberry would be the best for traveling in the US. I actually called Cingular, and they said I can get a plan, I just need a US address. CSR told me that a PO box would work. I think this may be the way to go.
