I just recently (as in about 2 months ago) paid out all my outstanding bills that were the result of an ex-girlfriend. I swear, everyone has had them at some point, and I just paid off mine. My credit "was" good years ago, but over all of that, I know its bad. I don't remember the number, but last time I checked, it was bad, and, due to my living situation (and going on more than a month long missions to the middle of no where), I've missed a few of those payments since then.
That being said, I recently became debt free. Like, zero debt. I am in the US military, stationed overseas. I had a lot of problems getting things paid because of things that happened here, with our pay, and everything. it really messed me up. So, in my mind, i was so happy and ready to finish out the rest of my time here (which was projected to be about a year from now), and then get another overseas duty station. Overseas duty stations are great because they don't have anything to do with your credit, if you don't want it to. All of your purchases can be done just by telling them you'll pay monthly for something. So I would eventually come back to the US, years from now, with no bills, some saved money in my pocket, and hopefully a chance to turn my credit around. Well, in a recent turn of events, I just found out I'm due to report to my next duty station in the beginning of March 2011, though i'll probably report early, in February 2011. The problem with going to the US is, I will need a car, and insurance, and a million other things, that cost much much more in the US (believe me, if you don't know, overseas is SO much cheaper, and you can live so much better). So, here I am, no bills but no good credit history, and still have a guaranteed 3 years of active duty status left. I need a reliable means of transportation and something that won't get stolen. I don't want to give out too much personal information, but i'm going to be stationed in a place where car theft isn't very low. Believe me, the military won't be sympathetic if i was ever to get my car stolen, though they might give me a ride back to the nearest car dealership.
So what do I do? i guess i could take a high interest loan just because I'll be deploying soon, and making a lot more money, or is there anything about the military getting good financing deals? I mean, aside from dieing, I pretty much have a guaranteed paycheck. Also, I've heard stories of guys in the US not making their monthly payment and the dealerships calling their office and talking to their boss. Its not a pretty sight.
