What would it take to Write and Publish a Book?

Now, i know that this question was asked before, but i would just like get a more in depth and up to date answer.

Are there any books out there that i should read before even attempting to write my own? I feel that i have incredible ideas that are truely inspiring, in the regard of plot and setting and stuff but i need to learn how to best translate those ideas into narritive form without sounding like an illiterate cave man.

Also, what would be the best perspective to write my book in? i want to write a science fiction book with one main protagonist but still have it go indepth to other characters. i like that the 1st person perspective can be personal and can help the reader better understand the Protagonist's plight and mind but i also like the way that the 3rd person perspective can help you better understand other characters and view situations in a more objective way. Which perspective is easier to write in? which is More Popular? My book may be categorized as a "Childeren's Book" like Harry Potter or The golden Compass, but those books certainly havesome "audult" themes in them.

I would also appreciate some insight on the Publishing aspect of writing a book, and are there any "Rookie" mistakes i should avoid?

Thank You

- Vic.
