In which order would it best to paint? i.e. background/stems/flowers/table/vase etc

Draw it in with vine charcoal then paint light to dark. You can always paint something darker but not as easy to get it lighter. So if you sketch it in, then paint it with progressively darker shades you'll be fine! Good Luck!

this painting shows that the flowers were first, then the vase and ttable then the background, but that is the painters trademark, paint it how you want to paint it, its about individuality aswell as artistic talent.

do the dark stuff first so if you make a mistake later on, it will be with a lighter color, easier to fix.

You can't paint first. You have to do it in charcoal or a pencil first and erase all your marks. You woud have to draw the table first, vase , flowers and others. You have to paint in the vase first things that DONT overlap has to be painted in first. thats the artist way I love to paint and draw so I know these things.

I would paint the background last, so that you can neaten all the edges and finish it off nicely. Also I would work my way down or across the painting, depending on which handed you are so you dont mess up wet paint. I sometimes move around the picture using the same colour in different areas and build up the picture that way. Also start light, it is really hard to cover up dark areas if u go wrong.
