What would happen if the government took over the media like in Iran?

Hearing about state-run media in Iran today got me thinking about this question. I know the First Amendment prohibits the government from infringing on freedom of the press, but a government with the military's support really can do whatever they want. Who would be there to stop them? I don't think we will ever have to worry about this, but it's an interesting hypothetical. Look forward to your thoughts.

The American media is the Government. Mostly Democratic driven, it paints whoever is in power a certain way.They show President Obama always in a certain golden light. When President Bush was in power they went out of their way to make look as bad as they could.
