What would happen if one wrote an intricate, elaborate, fascinating novel and..?

made one and only one copy of it
would leave it for grabs out in the open at a restaurant, library, or bookstore and see what happens with it?

what's more likely:

that someone would report this mysterious novel to the world at large
and make more copies of it and the origins would never be known and everyone would speculate forever and ever

or someone would claim authorship and it would just break your old heart to see your work stolen

or someone would just chuck it out?
