Compression loss can be due to valve timing problems (as in when did you replace the timing belt last). Bent valves (as in oops I did that too late or wrong). Bad valve seats (I knew I should have replaced that exhaust gasket sooner). Maybe even worn out rings (you mean I should have changed the oil and filter).
Then again maybe the spark plugs were/are not tightened down far enough.
