I recently bought a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 318ci in it. If I put the key to the 'On' position (without the engine running), the brake lights are off, but then I turn the engine on, and the brake lights light up. If I put the left blinker on, the left side rear blinker is very dim and alternates between the brake light coil and the blinker light coil (both within the same bulb). The odd thing is that the opposite side (right rear blinker) is bright like a normal blinker should be. This happens with either side, but only in the rear. The front blinkers work perfectly fine, but the rear ones are malfunctioning. Oh, and when the engine isn't running, but the key is in the on position, the rear blinkers work fine.
Now, when I first got the truck, the engine would die when I pushed the brakes in, so I pulled the brake light fuse and it stopped dying...but the brake lights still come on like i mentioned already. Also, the truck would die when I put it in reverse, so I pulled the back up lights fuse, and it doesn't die now.
An odd thing would be that when the blinkers/hazard lights are on, the engine surges/revs in succession with the flashing. And if you pull the blinker/brake light bulb out, the motor cuts out and dies. Oh, it also sputters and eventually dies when you pull the head light switch. Finally, if you let the engine run for 15 or so minutes, the check engine light comes on.
The previous owner had installed an electric brake system in the truck because they use to haul horse trailers with it, but he cut the wires in the cab and took the controls out. I just went through the truck and pulled all the wires that were for the electric brakes that he had left in the truck, and it didn't help anything, but someone told me the guy might have done a hack job wiring it and could have screwed something up. Figured it might be worth mentioning.
Uh, yeah, I think that pretty much covers it. Really hope someone can help, because wiring/electrical isn't my thing, and I've never seen something like this. Thanks in advance.
