What would cause check Engine Light to go on in 1999 Pontiac Bonneville?

My Check Engine light went on a few minutes ago after I started the car. I checked oil levels, tranny fluid levels, Anti-freeze levels. All good. This is the first time the light has ever gone on. What would be the possible causes and is it safe to drive until Saturday, when I can bring it in to be checked? Thanks.
