What would be the reason for a 97 Honda Civic to shift into gear but not move at all.?

While driving last night, we stopped at a red light and then the car would not move when we stepped off the break. Car was still running and shifting into gear but would not go. We did put transmission fluid in it and still nothing. If the car sits for a little while and you put it into drive it will drive a very very short time then just stop again. Please help.

sounds like you have a clogged trans filter or the trans just gave out.

sounds like you need a new tranny.
