I've decided to buy a new car to work on as a project. I'm really fond of light weight Japanese cars and I'm looking for something inexpensive and RWD to I decided to go with the Miata. Now, I want to drop a new engine in it as soon as I finish with the suspension, rolls bars, etc, but I'm looking for a light weight engine that is reliable, light weight, at least slightly economical, and not too expensive. The engine bay of the Miata is large enough to fit a small block V8 and that is a very common swap, but I'm worried that a V8 would be too heavy and cause some problems with the car's handling. Not to mention that I probably wouldn't be able to afford the gas for something like that.

I was thinking maybe a turbo V6 of some sort but I'm not sure. What do you think would be a good engine to drop into a Miata that would be powerful and wouldn't weigh down the front end too much? I plan on using this car for autocross type events, or just something fun to drive around the mountains.
