What would a convict who spent thirty years in jail think of the world in 2009?

Are they aware of outside political events? Do they use computers and cell phones?
Some news web sites have mentioned the possible release of prisoners who were associated with Charles Manson.
Fromme was put in jail in 1976. Would a prisoner be shocked by people and the outside world when they were released?
