what will make a transmisson go into gear once an not shift again ,96 dodge

intriped 2nd trans isdoinsamething? I am on the 2nd transmission and its doing the same thing as the first one done and what it is doing is it will shift once and if i turn my car off and restart it, it will go again and shift but then will do the same thing! Sometimes my car will die for no reason its aggravating iam paying on it and this sucks! its a 96 dodge intrepid
