I'm an aspiring member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, but I just found out pre-pledge AND pledge lines are illegal (even though they still go on). At first, the older girls seemed like they would go about it the right way but I learned differently as time went on. the older girls have told us we will be "on line" for seven months (which is too long and too much for my schedule) and have made us stay up late, learn ridiculous information, degrade ourselves, and buy them things (ALL HAZING they expect us to keep doing EVEN THOUGH I KNOW IT'S WRONG). when I tried to drop for many, many reasons, they pretty much convinced me to stay because they're the ones who vote members into the chapter and like my "line" wouldn't respect me...they also act like "paper members" get no respect but this process is making me disrespect myself. I have done things I never would've done if I didn't want to join and I feel like it goes against the national sorority's ideals, along with those of my family members who are greek. According to the NPHC Hazing Policy, pledge lines and pre pledge lines are illegal, just like hazing. I guess I'm trying to ask, has anyone ever dropped the process and been able to become a paper member? Because I'm scared to do it but I can't go through this any longer. I would also like to get out as soon as possible because everyone says hazing and the process always get worse BUT I STILL WANT TO BE A MEMBER OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA because of the ideals it holds from a national standpoint...any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
