What were the functions of warfare in ushering civilization?

Cavemen contrary to common belief did not primarily live in caves they settled near food sources which created warfare as a means of taking food. This affected civilization as now people built nearer to each other for protection therefore creating villages/towns. Walls limited construction and expansion of towns making them all stick to one place instead of being all over the place. All in all I'd say that warfare shaped civilization by making people stick together thus creating countries.
