What weapons do we have today that are considered to be 'too costly?"?

and why...

Back then it was the machine gun, submarine, the airplane, even gunpowder.

any answers are greatly appreciated!

Submarines and fighter jets, at least the ones we have in the wings (forgiving the pun). Both were designed to defeat the Soviet Union. Only the crumbs of the USSR threaten us, and these weapons hardly protect us from rogue/smuggled HEU (Highly Enriched Uranium). Several times over the last two years, HEU was found on immigrants exiting the Russian Republic, chiefly when entering Georgia (which borders Turkey and is a gateway to the Middle East.) Gunpowder is cheap, but (interestingly enough) George Washington made a deal with a family living in Delaware to produce enough for the Revolutionary War effort. Their name was Dupont.

It doesn't matter. No weapon is as costly as an American soldier's life. The military is willing to go to great lengths to ensure our men and women in uniform have what they need to fight effectively and survive.
