What was the point of Lemmiwinks in the South Park episode Death Camp of Tolerance?

I mean what was the significance of the gerbil and what was its relations to the main plot's narrative. It is hilarious. But it is hard for me to accept that the guys just put it there plain and simply just to fill time.
