Sounded like you were in the Army until age 60. And you probably spent your time building things mostly. Marching from place to place - guarding things - maybe collecting some taxes and beating up some shop owners - but mostly building all the time - roads, barracks, buildings of all sorts, aquaducts and bridges.
the number of slaves in the Roman world was just frightful - so probably a lot the Roman soldier's time was spent pushing slaves around - getting them to work and produce all these things both as planners and as raw labor.
