Although I am studying history, I do not have the answer from class. I believe any civilized law helps the whole of society. In the caveman time it would be to pull your share in supporting the group. Hunting, fishing. Of course back in that time, it was acceptable to fight a man for his woman, and if she did not like it you hit her over the head. That deffinately does not work today. I would say people did what they wanted until someone does it to them. If you steal you might think it is OK until someone steals from you. Then you know how it feels. Then you might agree with the whole of society that people should not steal.
