"What was Sparta's contribution to the growth of civilization in Greece"?

They had a dual kingship in which one king was always in Sparta. One would usually specialize in foreign affairs and one in domestic affairs, similar to our Secretary of state and our President in the last few administrations. Their biggest and best known contribution was the defense of Greece against the Persians at Thermopylae. That allowed the Greek city-states to survive and develop their various political practices, including democracy and republicanism.
