I have repeatedly heard (on this forum and in my interactions with white people) about the "good old days"..I am often STUNNED by this. I would like to know from white people what was good? and for whom was it good?

CRIME - Many whites go on about the crime. I understand that it was significantly low during apartheid. Why was it low then? DO you know that many "people of colour" where persecuted by the police often? Even the ARMY was used to maintain that horrifying regime. They kept things "under control". May I remind those who miss "the good old days" that APARTHEID was a tragic/sinful CRIME IN ITSELF! becareful before you start pointing fingers. You basically have lost the right to do that!

CRIME TODAY? Why do we have such a high crime rate today? Poverty is a big culprit. Why poverty? Lack of education, skills and good schools for the black community. Why don't they have this? Education is probably the most tragic consequence of apartheid and its system that left millions of black people poor and uneducate while the wonderful white people "earned" education and could further themselves. The standard of education was "fantastic" for WHITE PEOPLE...not for the rest of the country. Today....it is the most hopeful thing to see Black kids, Indian kids etc filling up the universities..They are our chance of a better south africa. not the past whites or the current croonies.

We know all too well about South Africa's very foundation...it favoured the white at the expense of everyone else. It is 20years since to solve such drastic systems of the past. I understand the need for safety and security, for our children to have a decent education, For corrupt criminals to be put behind bars etc..After a system like apartheid...we dont EXPECT to grow pink flowers and fly on unicorns...we are to start from scratch! Poverty, Education are the biggest consequences of Apartheid, and as a result..a crime rate that befits it. 20years since..the government has made great success and are making terrible mistakes too. It comes with trial and error. But I don't think we will always be doom and gloom...we are a system learning.

Sigh...here we go again.

You guys should read my political science/south african politics books written by AFRIKAANERS AND BRITS. I am pretty certain they would have vomitted a couple times while writing the books and researching...and filled with shame. Nonetheless, I was grateful that those authors were objective, truthful and not in denial.

@Polants - "my parents had nothing to do with apartheid" Where does YOUR ignorance come from. You dont sound very educated to me even with your apartheid priviledge white education. If all White kids said this I guess then the Apartheid system of white oppression is just in our imaginations! That thinking is just b*llsh*it! Your (white people) parents had EVERYTHING to do with that system. Directly and indirectly. You all contributed to maintaining the apartheid regime..for 50 long years. You all benefit from that system. I never want to hear a white person say "i worked really hard for what I got",.this applies to successful black, coloured and Indian people. White people got lucky because of a SYSTEM.

I can't stomach the current sidekicks running our young and fragile democracy...I am fully aware of the current situations. I also understand how our history affects many of our problems and that our current "leaders" are to be held accountable as well. So very sensitive topic this is.

There was NO corruption, NO strikes, good service, a proper education, less crime and we all had jobs, to name but a few ...

there was nothing good about the good ol' days. :(
the violence was always there, just contained and allowed to fester in non-white communities.
