Difference between the British Mandate for Palestine and United Nations Partition Plan (Resolution 181)

I know first existed the British Mandate and then the British handed power over to the UN who came up with the 2-state solution of Resolution 181? Is that correct?

What was the goal of the British Mandate for Palestine? Why did the Great Britain decided to turn its Mandate over to the United Nations?
