What vegetable is growing in my garden?

We had a vine overtake our garden a month or two ago. A vegetable of some type is growing. One single plant has now almost taken over a 12' X 12' garden. A squash or zucchini is what we think it is. It is striped like a watermelon, but long like a zucchini. It is thinner at the top, going to a more bulb shape at the bottom. Any ideas?
We have not planted any types of squash, zucchini, or gourd in our garden before. We think it may be a bird deposit.

try googling it to identify it. however, it could be some sort of cross-breed that you can't completely identify. cook a little and see what it tastes like. if it's sweet, it will be better for mashing and making soup. if it's not so sweet, it will be better for sauteeing or baking.

i'm thinking lots of squash soup, mashed squash with butter melting on it, maybe sauteed chunks of it, maybe baked into a loaf like zucchini bread.

you can probably steam and freeze it all - in chunks or mashed - and use it for months. hey, it's free food!
