What type of wood/paint should I use for outdoors?

My front door has a slight gap at the top which lets in the outside cold air and creates a wintry environment in our hallway. I want to add a piece of wood on the outside at the top of the door casing to cover up that gap.

Is there a specific kind of wood/paint I should use to prepare the surface? Nail/screw suggestions? Should I remove paint on the outside door casing so it adheres? Glue?

I have tried to install different sized weather stripping to cover up the gap, but nothing seems to fit or work without another complication coming up. The following link below will show you a quick illustration I did of what my door currently looks like indoor and out.

Thanks.
How wide is the gap?
AT ITS WIDEST I WOULD SAY ITS PROBABLY 1" AND GETS SMALLER AS YOU FOLLOW IT TO THE HINGE SIDE OF THE DOOR/DOOR FRAME

Is the door out of square in all places in the frame or just at the top?
THE TOP OF THE DOOR FRAME IS NOT LEVEL. EVERYWHERE ELSE INCLUDING THE DOOR IS PLUMB AND LEVEL.

What Kind of ascetic appeal do you want this to have when finished?
THE FRAME TO ME SEEMS PRETTY SIMPLE. THERE ISN'T ANY SPECIAL DESIGNS OR COLORS THAT WERE USED. ITS PRETTY MUCH A RECTANGULAR PIECE WITH WHITE PAINT. WHAT KIND OF PAINT I'M NOT SURE.

Hope this helps.
