What type of wild potatoes are growing in my garden?

I have been digging up garden beds for this year's garden, and I keep on pulling out these tiny tubers! They are small, brown, and quite hard. Most are about an inch long and 2/3 inch wide. Some are an inch long and 1/8 of an inch wide. Some look like miniature russets, and some look like miniature sweet potatoes! It is baffling, because the nearest compost pile of mine is 25 feet away- in case of potato peels being planted unintentionally- yet these are much smaller and much harder than any type of potato I have seen! I have tried to find the top of these tubers, but I cannot find any roots that go to the top soil. Apparently, the tops had died last year and these are the leftovers... I live in Texas and this is the 12th of March, 2010.
