If you can get them... Celestial Pearl Danios http://rmbr.nus.edu.sg/news/images/20070228-celestail_danio.jpg are the best choice. Native to the Betta range, not extremely active, small adult size.Really wouldn't go more than 6. They are getting easier to find.
The only other sane choices... this is a 10g... are the other microrasboras.Like the Red Razor (Boraras brigittae) http://aquatic-photography.com/gallery/files/2158-_db_IMG_58661.jpg or maybe Boraras merah http://www.h4.dion.ne.jp/~tamao/sakana%20mera2.jpg .
Here's a further list of schooling fish better suited to a 10g.....
Microrasbora erythromicron
Microrasbora gatesi
Microrasbora kubotai
Microrasbora nana
Microrasbora rubescens
Boraras maculatus
Boraras micros
Boraras urophthalmoides
... and despite the small adult sizes,I still wouldn't go more than 8 of any of these.

I was wondering how many and what kind of school i can put in my tank. It currently has a HM betta and 5 ghost shrimp. I was leaning towards rasboras or bloodfin tetras. Although other suggestions are welcome! :)
Its a sand bottom tank in case you needed to know

rasboras and bloodfins may be leaning towards the too large, too active side. IMO smaller tetras like neons or cardinals would be best
