What type of pencil is best for watercolor sketches?

I have been using a regular mechanical pencil (bad, i know...) and the lines show through very faintly. I would prefer not to use a watercolor pencil (they didn't blend too well with my paints in the past...), but if that's what's generally used, I'll try them again. Would a regular colored pencil or a specific type of sketch pencil work? If you're a watercolor artist, how do you do your preliminary sketches?
