What type of paint do i use to hand paint my van?

I have heard that enamel based paints would work but which type and how do i go about it...ie. Do i need to undercoat? Sand down? I want to be able to use paint you can buy from a DIY store so I can keep the whole project pretty cheap.

Thanks but I think you misunderstood, I want handpaint it....with a brush or roller, I have looked at the price of a can of spray paint and it would cost too much to do what i want...ie it would need around 10 cans of spray paint x $20 a can = over budget
