The main features I look for in a standard hiking boot are waterproofness, breathability, quality construction, ankle support, fit, fit, fit, and fit. Waterproof is almost a necessity, especially in the Pacific Northwest; you don't want to be spending half your trip with soggy wet feet...the consequences are more than just discomfort. Make sure that it is a somewhat reputable brand or got good reviews (look around online), because it is better to spend $150 on a boot that will last for 10 years than $30 on a pair of Wal-mart boots that only last half a season. However, the MOST important feature to look for in a boot is how it fits your foot. This is much more important with hiking boots than with everyday shoes. For everyday shoes like sneakers, you will only be walking in them for a relatively short amount of time with plenty of breaks in between. With hiking boots, you will probably be on your feet for 10 straight hours per day. In addition to this, hiking boots are stiffer (they have to be to support your ankle and have thick soles), so they tend to be less forgiving. Go to a good outdoors store in your area and try on AT LEAST three different pairs of boots to find a size and brand that fit you well. It is amazing how differently various boot brands shape thier shoes. Hopefully there will be a knowledgable boot-fitter there to help you. Keep in mind that if you find a boot or brand that fits you well at the store, you can always look for it on sale on the internet. All outdoors stores that sell boots also sell insoles and liners, which are a big help for many people. Personally I dont need any, but I have a friend who had boot issues for years until he found an insole that fixed his problems. Good luck, and if you will be using this boot for more than one trip, dont be afraid to spend money for a good pair. I typically look in the $100-$200 range for standard hiking boots. Some good companies are Scarpa, Asolo, Merrell, La Sportiva, and many others.
