What type of fish should I keep?

I would like to keep some fish to finish off an 'underwater' room in my house (blue walls, sand coloured carpet etc)
I was thinking of keeping a couple of fancy goldfish in an aquarium, but after researching how much space they need, I am now not so sure! (I feel so guilty now for keeping goldfish in a small tank as a child, no wonder they died within a couple of years. Pet shops need to get their act together regarding selling suitably sized tanks for goldfish!) I am looking at buying a second hand tank off ebay, and in reality I can't afford something more than 80-100 litres, which some people say isn't enough space for 2 fancy goldfish.
The reason I'm attracted to goldfish is that they can become really very friendly fish, which is what I would like, rather than a school of fish who are very interested in each other and have no interest in people other than when they feed them, or fish who are so shy that you never see them because they are always hiding from you!
So, I am looking for friendly, easy to keep fish, that can be kept in an 80-100 litre aquarium (or smaller).
Any suggestions?
alexsart - I am in the UK and tanks that size are hundreds of pounds over here!
catx - I know most fish will become responsive to food - but that is the point I was trying to make - I would like fish that are friendly when there ISN'T food around, as I have found goldfish to be.
