What type of clothing should I pack to my trip to Seattle in January?

I am female and from Australia. I do not know what a true winter is and I have never been overseas before. I am going on an exchange program to seattle and I will be going to school there for a couple of days (I'm 15) as well as going on some tours. I want to look fashionable but also stay warm- I'm not sure what to do? The trip is in January so I'm guessing that would be the middle of your winter...... I also want to pack kind of light in case I might buy things over there and need room in my luggage.

Thank you!
Remember, I'm from Australia, not New Zealand. I realise it is going to be cold, I know all about that- I just need some good quality suggestions about what type of clothing I should wear to keep warm whilst still looking fashionable.

Thanks :)

I live in Washington (and I visit Seattle about every other weekend). I'd say you should bring some warm clothes and jackets, and definitely have something for the ridiculous rain we have here. Just 2 days it snowed where I live (and in Seattle). Seattle is never too horrible, but you definitely want some warm clothes considering the season and that you're right by the water.

From what I understand, winter in New Zealand is quite comparable to winter in Seattle, London would be another similar climate. Seattle winters are usually quite mild 40 to 50 Fahrenheit, or so (5 to 10 C.) It can however dip as low as 10 F (-10C,) or potentially hit 60 (15C.) Likewise, it could be rainy, snowy, or just plain cold. It also depends on how far out of town you'll be traveling. It can be decent in Seattle, but cold in the hills and mountains.

Warm clothes....something to walk in puddles because it's gonna be raining. :)
