I am a graduate student at the very hilly University of Kansas. Between my wife and I, we only have 1 car and often our needs for the car overlap. I figured it would be good for me to get a bike since its harder for me to walk but easier to ride. I'll be riding about 2 miles every other day on a hilly campus. What type of bike would you suggest? Any links to retailers would also be greatly appreciated.

The best and only place you should be buying a new bike is at an independent dealer. Yes, you will end up paying a little more. But they will not sell you a lousy bike, you'll get good advice, and you'll get good support after you make the purchase.

Check out the yellow pages, or wherever you like to find local business. Go to the bike shop and look around. Ask some questions. Take a couple for a ride. Write down some makes and models, then go online and see what people have to say about them.

In your case I would look for a multiple speed road bike, since you will be tackling hilly roads. From there it depends on how much you plan on spending. If you really plan on using this as a daily commuter and getting good use out of it, try not to spend less then $300 - if you purchase walmart junk it will not last.

Stay far far away from Walmart and other department store bikes. Visit the local bike shop and look at some of the road or hybrid bikes. I don't know your size but if you have a 31-32 inch inseam a Forge cts 1000 road bike is a good buy. Too bad it only comes in one size. You can get the Forge M Street bikes in a 17 and 19 inch frame. They make for a nice commuting bike for less money.
